States celebrate H2O

Monday, May 04, 2009

by Jessica Dill

April 22, 2009 -- WASHINGTON -- Earth Day is dedicated to awareness and appreciation for the environment. And since water makes up most of the Earth's surface, what better way to celebrate than with a water test?

This week water purity advocates from rural areas of the country gathered on Capitol Hill for the 10th annual Great American Water Taste Test.

Representatives from Alabama took home the gold for cleanest drinking water, but said there was more to the competition then winning.

"We are attending a National Rural Water Association rally, but more importantly we are here to support the efforts of rural water throughout the nation," said Kathy Horne, representative from Alabama..

The taste test was part of a three day event designed to ensure continued loan and grant funding from Congress for water projects. Sponsors want support for training and technical assistance for the nation's rural and small water systems.
