ARWA Recognized For Outstanding Achievement
The date was October 5 – 8, 2009 in Louisville, Kentucky. The event in the bluegrass State was the Annual Conference of the National Rural Water Association held as a joint venue with the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exhibition. Over 2500 water and wastewater people from across the nation attended various training sessions and visited with the many exhibitors who displayed their products and services.

It was an event to remember. Louisville, Kentucky, being the home of the Kentucky Derby is no stranger to winners and champions. It made the perfect setting for the NRWA Annual Awards Ceremony. As individuals and State Rural Water Associations throughout the Nation were being recognized for performance and outstanding achievement, Alabama Rural Water Association, a member utility and staff were among those being noted.
The Alabama Rural Water Association received the 2009 Magazine of the year Merit Award while Chris Lovelace the ARWA’s Training Specialist was selected by his peers as the 2009 Training Specialist of the Year and Kathy Horne, ARWA’s Executive Director was recognized for Outstanding Leadership for Emergency Response.
Alabama ‘s honors continued when member utility Perdido Bay Water, Sewer and FPD was recognized for the Exemplary Efforts In Environmental Protection Award. This Award represents a utility on a national level who has demonstrated exemplary initiatives, projects or education on the critical role of the utility in Environmental Protection to the general public locally and from a national perspective.
The Perdido Bay Water Sewer and FPD demonstrates outstanding environmental initiatives and education routinely. The utility’s outreach to their 3100 customers in Elberta, Alabama, is widespread through their website, water festivals, coloring and poster contests, and display of the Quality on Tap logo throughout their office and distribution system. In addition, their participation during 2009 in the Alabama Rural Water Association Drinking Water Taste Test pronounced Perdido Bay Water Sewer and Fire Protection District the State Winner and sent them en route to Washington, D. C. where they also won the National title of the “Best Tasting Drinking Water in the Nation. It was the first time in history a drinking water sample from Alabama won the National Taste Test Title and brought home the “Gold Medal Award.”

Kathy Horne Recognized for Outstanding Leadership for Emergency Response
Kathy Horne has served on the National Rural Water Association Emergency Response Committee since 2006.
During 2006-2008 she served as Chairman of the National Rural Water Association Committee under the past presidency of Rodney Tart from North Carolina. She continues her efforts currently as a member of the Committee striving to organize and develop an Emergency Response Program nationwide offering preparedness and readiness on behalf of State Rural Water Associations to support and assist rural water and wastewater systems on site during natural disasters and emergency situations as they occur.
We applaud Kathy for her outstanding leadership abilities in this regard recognized by the National Rural Water Association.
Congratulations to the ARWA Staff, Board of Directors and Member Utilities for the effort of all creating outstanding performance worthy of recognition by the National Rural Water Association and our peers.
