In cooperation with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, the Alabama Rural Water Association regularly offers Primary, Secondary and Advanced Water Treatment Operator Certification Exam Preparatory Courses and Collection, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification Exam Preparatory Courses in various locations throughout the State.

Each water and wastewater Operator Certification Exam Preparatory Course is free of charge, however, each training location is normally available to a maximum number of 15 students per location.

Student enrollment for certification examination preparation is given priority over student enrollment for continuing education purposes. If the maximum number of students for each course location is not met by those enrolling for certification examination preparation, individuals seeking continuing education hours will be given an opportunity to enroll and participate. Training manuals and materials will be provided to those students preparing for the certification exam only.

According to contractual agreements with the ADEM a minimum of five (5) students are required per course location. In order to allow training opportunities for as many utilities as possible, each utility will be limited to three (3) student’s participation. If the maximum number of students for each class location is not met, those utilities wishing to enroll additional students will be given an equal opportunity to do so.

Those individuals enrolling for certification exam preparation purposes must attend 100% of each course for substitution of required experience credit purposes for operator certification. It is the responsibility of each individual attending the operator training courses to comply with ADEM Division 10 Regulations in order to qualify for certification examinations through the ADEM and to meet operator certification requirements.

Gary Byrd, Training Coordinator currently manages the Certification School Program for the ARWA.
