About the John A. Garrett Scholarship Fund

The ARWA Board of Directors established a Scholarship Fund named the "John A. Garrett Scholarship Fund." This fund was organized for educational promotion of water and wastewater related careers throughout the State.

Six scholarships are offered annually to individuals who meet the criteria. Two recipients are selected from each of three regions representing North, Central and South Alabama (see map) in the amount of $750 per recipient.

The applicant must be a dependent child of a water or wastewater utility employee or Board Member with 2 years or more experience and the utility must be a current member of Alabama Rural Water Association to be eligible.

New this year! To insure continued growth in the number of certified water and wastewater operators in the State of Alabama, three of the six scholarships will be offered to individuals striving to enhance their professionalism by attending Alabama Water or Wastewater Operator Certification Courses for Grades I-IV certification examination preparation.  This is offered to expand the educational opportunities of those individuals interested in water and wastewater industry careers.  We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity.

Judging is based upon ACT scores, GPAs, extracurricular activities, reference letters and leadership potential.

ARWA Provides Educational Assistance…
2011 Scholarships Awarded

As the month of May each year brings another school year to a close, it is also a time to offer assistance to many young graduates who are interested in continuing their goals to include a higher educational degree.

The ARWA has for many years supported an Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser in support of the John A. Garrett Scholarship Fund. The 2011 Fundraiser which was organized by the Association Golf Tournament Steering Committee consisting of Jeff Harrison (Southeastern Tank, Inc.), Kevin Smith (Neptune Technology Group, Inc.), Ronnie Steadham (Mueller Company), Mark Harris (Consolidated Pipe & Supply, Inc.), John Skipper (DPC Enterprises, L. P.), and Mike Shaw (TTL, Inc.) provided the monetary support to offer two $750 scholarships to deserving applicants in each of the State's three regions. This Fundraiser was also supported by the Scholarship Fund Board Members, Charles Lay, Shelby County Water & Sewer Service; Greg Dutton, Moulton Water Works Board and Randolph Hall, South Bullock County Water Authority.

Applicants are judged on scholastic and leadership abilities as well as their community involvement. For 2011, 41 application packages were received as the winners were selected. Chosen to receive the ARWA educational scholarships for the Fall 2011 enrollment were:
