John A. Garrett Scholarship Fund

The ARWA Board of Directors established a Scholarship Fund named the "John A. Garrett Scholarship Fund." This fund was organized for educational promotion of water and wastewater related careers throughout the State.
Six scholarships are offered annually to individuals who meet the criteria. Two recipients are selected from each of three regions representing North, Central and South Alabama (see map) in the amount of $750 per recipient.
The applicant must be a dependent child of a water or wastewater utility employee or Board Member with 2 years or more experience and the utility must be a current member of Alabama Rural Water Association to be eligible. Read more about Eligibility.
Judging is based upon ACT scores, GPAs, extracurricular activities, reference letters and leadership potential.

The Alabama Rural Water Association John A. Garrett Scholarship Awards Winners were announced during the month of May for six deserving individuals. Recipients representing the northern, central and southern regions of the State were selected by a panel of judges in early April.
The ARWA has for many
years held an Annual Golf
Tournament in support of the
John A. Garrett Scholarship Fund.
The 2009 Fundraiser which was
organized by the Association Golf
Tournament Planning Committee
consisting of Jeff Harrison, Goodwyn,
Mills and Cawood, Inc.; Committee
Members: Wes Self, Integra Water;
Ronnie Steadham, Mueller Company;
Kevin Smith, Neptune Technology
and Mark Harris, Consolidated Pipe
and Supply. It rovides the monetary
support to offer two $750 scholarships
to deserving applicants from the State's
three regions.
Each eligible scholarship
I application was reviewed and careful consideration given
to ACT score, GPA's, extracurricular activities and leadership abilities. For
2009,34 application packages were
judged as the winners were selected.
The individuals chosen because of
their exceptional abilities to receive the
ARWA educational scholarships for the Fall 2009 enrollment were:

Christopher Alexander Leslie Having graduated from Hanceville High School with a 4.0 GPA in 2007, Christopher is currently attending the University of Alabama where he is pursuing a Degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering and maintaining a 3.75 College GPA.

Megan Elizabeth Hester Meagan graduated from Colbert Heights School with a 4.0 GPA in 2004. Since that time she has attended Auburn University and has completed her matriculation in the Doctor of Pharmacy professional program and is now attending James I. harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University to complete her degree. |
